Does It Take Money To Make Money?

Have you ever heard someone say, it takes money to make money? Many people believe it does and admittedly, it does seem like it’s true.

With regards to Internet Marketing or being an Entrepreneur, does it take money to make money? The short answer is, “No.

You can effectively launch an Internet Marketing career without a single dime.  All you need is a computer and an Internet connection, which does cost money, but assuming you have those two components already, you’re can be in business.

Many people new to online  marketing have gotten their start as an affiliate marketer.

Aside from shuffling around in your attic to find something you can sell for a profit on eBay, affiliate marketing is your best bet for a zero-dollar start-up business in the Internet marketing industry.  All you need is your own unique affiliate ID, which you can usually get for free.

You can go to sites like PayDotCom, Amazon, Commission Junction, LinkShare, or  very popular, ClickBank (to name a few).

And with a little research you can learn how to get free traffic to your affiliate sites and you can begin generating an affiliate income without investing a penny of your own money.

With that being said, it’s best though if you save a few dollars here and there to invest in some tools that are going to make your Internet marketing efforts a wholelot easier.  For example, you could sit around brainstorming for days trying to come up with a list of keywords – or, you could pay for a one-day subscription to WordTracker , make a purchase of Market Samuria, and harvest thousands of keywords in less than an hour.

Also, you could nothing but the free web 2.0 social sites that are free such as Face Book, MySpace or Squidoo, to host your content and affiliate links.  Or, you could fork up a $9.95 one-time fee to get a domain name and $7.95 a month for hosting and have your own business presence on the World Wide Web.

You can also spend months searching for free information about how to do a task that will help you make money as an Internet marketer – such as how to master pay per click advertising.

Or, you can simply invest in a step-by-step guide to help shorten your learning curve all together.

Most successful marketers suggest you take a look at your current budget and see what you have to invest.  If you have to start out with nothing, don’t let that hold you back, go for it,  just began to set aside some money from any profits you make to re-invest  back into your online efforts.

Everything you’ll invest in is built to ease your workload and hasten the process of buiding and running your online business, so your income will increase faster and with less input from you as you learn to wield these tools in your favor.

Eventually, as you become more successful in your online business, you can then outsource many of the mundane things in your business.

Be aware, nothing is really “FREE”, especially with regards to IM. Yes you can use free methods to get traffic, but the real truth is, in oder to build a successful IM business you will either have to invest money or you will have to invest your time, proabaly a little more of both.

I’d really encourage anyone seriously thinking about satrting a IM busines, to try, if at all possible, to invest in some form of training about Internet Marketing, it can only help speed up you journey towards success.

So, as Nike say’s, just it. No better time to start than today.

  • Yes all these different options to help one generate an income online are great ideas. Affiliate marketing is one of THE best ways to do acquire some cash flow. Most of us know of at LEAST ONE person online who is creating a full-time income from affiliate marketing alone. That is amazing!! And it’s proof that represents the name of the game.

Great topic to talk about Willie, since many have that belief that affiliate marketing is a joke. Hmmm…I wonder how much THEY’RE making :-).

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Hi Willie,

Really enjoyed this post! I’ve done this the free way, but it has taken me so long to even figure out WHAT I wanted to do. In thinking “out loud” over my own journey, what would’ve helped is to invest in a course or a coach at the beginning of this journey to help sort it all out right at the first, and give me a big picture idea of what kinds of things one can do online, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and what it would take to do them. Then I’d need a little time to process that information and come up with a plan. Finally, I need a course or coach, or even a virtual assistant, who could help me do the technological part of things and hang with me to get it going.

But the problem is that there are so many courses and coaches out there that one must do research to find the right one, which could take a long time on its own — assuming one even has the resources to invest in it!

Thanks for saying that this could all be done free, though. It’s nice to know that the route I’ve taken can be done! Another thing that has helped tremendously is being in a tribe. I’ve learned a lot of things in TSA, both from individuals answering my questions and from reading these blogs :)

  • Great post, Willie! I think that you are so right about the question of money involved. You really hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that, even if it doesn’t cost money, there is some price that must be paid for success. After all, if you get an affiliate link, and don’t do anything with it or invest the time to help people find it, it’s not really doing any good at all. There are opportunities that take money, but I think that you are right about the need to have affiliate programs as well. I personally use a blend, with a primary that I market as well as affiliate products. The trick is to find what works for you.

  • I would suggest that there are no offline businesses which can be started up with no capital. There is always rent for property or stock to buy or a vehicle to buy.

Online though it is very different, the overheads are considerably greater. I suppose you do have to buy a computer and internet connection but most people have that already. After that there are so many free tools available as Willie said, that you really do not need to spend anything.

Most of the paid tools are merely a package of a group of readily available no cost software, if you knew where to find it.

Having said all that, once you have got started, like a few other commenters have said, it would be sensible to invest in training or mentoring to keep you on the right track.

  • Willie – Great information here. You’ve pointed out some wonderful things here for people to take into consideration and great resources. Those who really want to make a change in their life and let go of a belief which was holding them back will no be able to go for it as Jaden says.

  • Willie,
I agree you can start an online marketing business with no money, and I also agree if a person can pay for some training it would be beneficial. There are so many scams out there and fell for a few when I started. So I think a newbie should go for it, but research any training materials before purchasing. I could have saved thousands if I did. I just bought everything that came around.

  • Willie, your a great mentor in our industry and have place a fantastic topic to evaluate.

I agree with the hard work it will take and the time you must invest for your personal growth will never stop. You must have a team of supportive people who will be there for you day and night. You will not make much money to live on alone.

Yes, a real home base business should not rely only on one source of revenue, but many. That is the ultimate goal and easily accomplished with the right team.

Willie, you have laid out the basic strategy for anyone to get started in affiliate marketing making money not only for themselves yet, the person who has the product that you will be marketing. Very well put, Willie.

I look forward to your next wonderful post.

  • Hi Willie,

yes, it is amazing what is available for free on the internet, which is great when you are starting out with hardly any funds.
I like the thought that people will go back later when the funds are coming in and “donate” to those who made services available.

    Thanks for the great post.

  • Hey Willie

I agree, you could start with nothing, all it takes is a willingness to work hard.

It also takes a willingness to reinvest your earnings to grow.

  • Very good advice Willie. I agree, it “can” be done for free, however spending money on having your own website and money on training will be the best investment a new internet marketer will ever make. There is a lot of free training around, but most free training is just an introduction to a paid course.

    bye for now, Julieanne

  • Ben:

    Morning Willie
    Spot on with your post.
With a little money, a lot of time and hard work you can make it online.
And if you can get the right information you can cut your learning time and your hard work in half.

As you said, there are some tools that you need, but if you have no money(or very little) you can come right without them, it just takes some more work from your side.

    Great post, really enjoyed it

  • Willie,
Through most of this article, you have explained ways to create a strong internet presence and also make money by spending very little. But without investing in training or using something like pay per click, you will have to invest a lot of time to study and learn. There is no getting around it. There is definitely an investment involved – time or money, and for most of us, an awful lot of both.

  • Affiliate marketing is a great way to start an IM biz. I’m a network marketer by trade and I use affiliate marketing to fund my lead generation campaigns. I’d advise anyone just starting out in online network marketing to consider utilizing affiliate marketing as a great tool to fund their online efforts.

  • Hi Willie,
Enjoyed your article. Certainly starting an online business required only a fraction of the monetary investment that starting a bricks and mortar store – but (personally) I still believe it’s important to invest in good quality tools. I take advantage of the free stuff whenever it makes sense, but to me quality comes through in the end product.

  • Hi Willie,

Thanks for sharing this informative post.

You covered some very important information and it is critical that Internet Marketers understand that they can get started on a limited budget, but their long term growth will depend on not only investing and re-investing in their business, but it is important for Network Marketers to invest in themselves and their continuous education.

Would be Marketers should never jump in blind and you are so right about at least investing in some sort of training, so that you have a basic understanding of the fundamentals to shorten the learning curve.

    To your continued success,

  • You are so right about the little cost that it takes to be online. All you need in the internet connection and some hard work. Then find a great community like TSA and you are all set. It takes some time but it is well worth it in the end.

  • Hi Willie,

I was tempted to add the need for long distance service but that really isn’t a requirement given a decent Skype (or Google Voice) connection. I do agree that it can be done with no money but am with you that there is a trade off. The more you can invest, the faster you can succeed.
To that end, I would add that the more you can invest in coaching or training, the better off you’ll be because you can then potentially avoid many of the pitfalls and missteps that others have made. Thanks for this post.
